Punnasak Sukee: KAFKA AND I (… and the Agony of Being in the Seemingly Democratic Country Where the Society Is Doomed to Collapse)

Theatre Na Zabradli, Sunday, June 26 at 3.00 pm

Set amongst the ongoing political crisis of the seemingly democratic country, the show reveals the story of a college student who comes from farmer’s family in the impoverished provincial area. Trying to adapt himself to the capitalist society and people with opposite political views, he feels the agony of losing his identity. Being disturbed by political climate, he does not perform well in class and feels alienated.  He is afraid that he would fail his family’s hope if he cannot be graduated. The fear is heightened when his professor turned down his degree project’s proposal as it did not catch her academic interest. He then tries to please his professor by studying the life and work of her favourite writer, Franz Kafka. And then, “as he has awaked one morning in his bed from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed into a gigantic insect”.

An allusion to Kafka’s life and work, this performance is from the internally renowned Bangkok University Theatre Company. “KAFKA AND I” is the forefront of modern Thai theatre movement.  The original music and the surrealistic physical movement enhance the nightmarish atmosphere. The bold interpretation and reflection of contemporary society made it a thought provoking and unique theatrical piece.

Bangkok University Theatre Company, the creator of “Dancing to Nirvana” and “Dear Death” which has been performed in Czech Republic, Singapore and Thailand, is operated and managed by Department of Performing Arts, Bangkok University, Thailand’s most renowned theatre school. The primary aim is to bring forth the contemporary Thai theatre to the global stage with the mixture of ongoing socio-political context of the country with the modern theatre practice on the basis of Thai traditional performing arts.
