Lev Borisovič Erenburg, Vlasta Smoláková – after motifs of Alexandr Nikolayevic Ostrovsky –
The Foster-Daughter
Theatre Na Zabradli, Thursday, July 1, 2010, 3 p.m.
“A sardonic comedy about how tender kisses and fisticuffs originate in one and the same place: the vital and unfathomable human spirit.”
“Scenes from village life”, as the pastoral sounding subtitle of the 1859 play from the classic Russian theatre of A.N. Ostrovský claims, is transformed in the hands of top Russian director and acting teacher Lev Erenburg into “genre tableaux” in a thrilling, clamorous account: the characters – and, together with them, the young actors – throw themselves body and soul into locating and expressing their own truth about the visceral depths of the human soul, while exploring methods of acting that can be understood without words.
What motivates the landlady Ulanbeková to meddle in the fates of those around her, in particular her foster daughter Naďa’s tale of love’s first bloom, in a way that brings everything crashing down? – Lofty motives can conceal long-ago traumas; behind these may lie unfulfilled dreams and desires, and underlying them all – the vulnerable human spirit, which in its natural yearning for love and good remains an eternal riddle daring us to unravel it.
Lev Borisovič Erenburg (* 1953) - director and art manager of Not big drama theatre in (Nebolšoj dramatičeskij teatr) in Sankt Peterburg, he is a student of famous director G. Tovstonogov and now he belongs to the Russian best theatre directors and pedagogues: his inscenations On the bottom based on Gorki´s play, was nominated for the Golden mask (similar to A. Momentarily he works on a new inscenation in Moscow artistic theatre (MCHT). He fulfils his creed „Living actor in maximally escalated circumstances“ by applying demanding etude method „because only in this case does the actor really becomes a creator“.
