Malostranská Beseda - Music Club

The existence of the building known now as the Malostranská Beseda – Music Club begins at the end of the 14th century. After many reconstructions, changes of owners and activities the amateur theatre Pokrok was founded here. Its famous actors (as Jakub Seifert, Jindřich Mošna, Otýlie Sklenářová - Malá, later Hana Kvapilová or Zita Kabátová etc.) and unusual activities (seventeen premieres were produced per year) gave fine background for the others amateur theatres. In 1967 the first performance of the theatre Divadlo Járy Cimrmana took place here. Another important theatre group on the stage of Malostranska Beseda was the theatre Divadlo Dostavník during the period 1964 – 1981. Besides of the remarkable contribution for the Czech amateur theatre history Dostavník also participated in the foundation of the Jazz Club /1966/ and later in the foundation of the Folk and country Club /1971/. Some hundreds exhibitions of cartoons, big amount of guest companies and since autumn 1976 performances of the THEATRE LUCERNA MB have been produced here - in Malostranská beseda being respectable successor of the historical cultural club from the 19th century.

From 2006 until December 2009 the building was under construction. In September 2008 after 180 years its towers were equipped with three domes (faithful replicas of the original). Appearance of the building now respects the original form of 17 century. The height of the largest bowl is 6.5 m. However, what has not changed is the focus of the program. As before there are various bands, theatre, exhibitions and other artistic genres. Just the Theatre Lucerna MB has unfortunately lost its “home”.
